SARAH ANN CLARKE
(JOHN'S 2ND WIFE)

Sarah was at home born on 27th of September 1857 at Picanniny Gully, Bendigo. Sarah was the 6th child of Frederick & Mary Ann Clark (nee Folley). I do have a copy of her birth certificiate.

It seems as though the Clarke family and the Jewell family were "good friends". William (Sarah's brother) was married to Mary, (John's older sister). Also Maria (Sarah's sister) had a son called William Ninnis. He later married John's daughter Elizabeth.

Unfortunately I know little of Sarah's life, except that she was a well educated woman. According to familiy stories, Sarah taught John to read and write.

photo of SarahOn the 25th March 1880, Sarah married John Jewell at a private house in Forest St Sandhurst. Her address on her marriage certificate was shown as Forest St. It could be assumed that the house that they were married in belonged to her parents. Sarah was aged 23. Witnesses to the wedding were William Frederick Clark, her brother, who went on to marry John's sister Mary, and Maria Ann Ninnis (Sarah's sister). I am fortunate to have in my possession a copy of the original marriage certificate.

Life would have been difficult for Johnís new bride Sarah as she started her new life as a wife and a step-mother to John and Elizabethís 3 young children. Unfortunately I know little of Sarah's life, except that she was a well educated woman. According to familiy stories, Sarah taught John to read and write.

Sarah and John had 2 children;

Frederick Albert Victor Jewell - born 04/07/1881
William Leslie Norman Jewell - born 03/08/1889

photo of SarahFollowing the death of John (her husband) Sarah inherited the property in Bell St. She kept the block until 15th of March 1915, when she sold it to the Commercial Permanent Land and Building Society, but moved to their house in Havilah Street Long Gully.

Following the death of John Jewell (jnr), Sarah moved to Melbourne to be closer to her family. She moved to 34 Ashworth Street Albert Park. Unfortunately Sarah died of "old age", at the age of 78, at her home in Ashworth Street. On the 3rd of December 1935, Sarah was taken to and buried with her husband John at White Hills Cemetery.
