DETAILS OF HOUSES JOHN JEWELL OWNED

From my research I have been able to discover that John owned numerous properties in Bendigo. According to his will he owned the following property;

  1. Allotment 273 section A, corner of Havilah Rd & Bennett St Long Gully. Vol 251 -Folio 154. On this site was erected a 5 roomed weatherboard house, occupied & rented by James Rosewell

  2. Allotment 563 section K, in Thomas Street, Long Gully. Vol 3114 - Folio 745. On this site was erected a weatherboard home, lived in by John. Also erected on this site was a weatherboard house fronting Bell Street

  3. Allotment 562 Section K, Thomas Street Long Gully. Vol 3114 - Folio 746. On this site was erected 2 weatherboard houses in terrace with a brick dividing wall. 5 rooms each. One was occupied by Elizabeth Ninnnis (Jewell - John's daughter), with the other being occupied & rented by William Brocchi.

  4. Allotment 504 a Section K in Bell Street, Long Gully. Vol 2129 - Folio 730. On this site was erected a 5 room weatherboard home, occupied & rented by James Carnavan.

Also a weatherboard house fronting Robinson St with 4 rooms and a verandah, and a detached kitchen, occupied by Mrs Jane Vercoe.

  7. Allotment 479 Section K. Residence area from Thomas St to Bell St No 14489, Sandhurst Division. On this site was erected a weatherboard house with 5 rooms let to Fred Terry. According to the Land records, allotment 479 Section K, is on the corner of Bannerman & McClure St (?). The Title for this land is on Vol 996 Folio 036

House No 1

The original title for this land was granted on the 2nd of December 1867, Vol 251 - Fol 154. The land title was transferred numerous times, until John Jewell of Bell St Bendigo, Mining Manager purchased the land on 21st of June 1904. On the 11th of September 1909, a new title was drawn up, Vol 3365 - Fol 991. The reason for this was to combine the original title. On the 11th of March Sarah Jewell (who had inherited the land), mortgaged the land to the Commercial Permanent Land and Building Society of View St Bendigo.. On the 6th of March 1920, Sarah obviously discharged the mortgage, as the title was transferred back to her. On the 3rd of September 1928, Sarah sold the property to Annie Victoria Brocchi, of 205 Havilah St, Long Gully.

There is quite a deal of confusion regarding the ongoing titles of this block and a neighboring block. Records indicate that William Leslie Jewell purchased the neighboring block on the 20th May 1913, from Oscar Herbert Osborne. William sold the block on the 3rd of September 1928 to Annie Victoria Brocchi, the same woman that bought the other property. Both this block, and the above were combined, and divided to form 2 titles Vol 5824 -Fol 750, and Vol 6284 - Fol 747. The first of the titles, then changed to Vol 8079 - Fol 230. Once again during this period the "Jewell" had no interest in any of the transfers.

Houses No 2 and 3

These houses are next door to one another. According to research John was granted a crown grant on both blocks of land, that is he was the first owner. The grant was given on the 9th of January 1906. He paid fifty pounds for the land on Title - Vol 3114 - Fol 746.(House 3), and Fifty Two pounds for the land on Vol 3114 - Fol 745, (house 2).

According to the Title on Vol 3114 - Fol 746, the land was transferred to Sarah Ann Jewell, and John Jewell (Jnr) following the granting of probate on John Jewell Snr's estate. Probate was granted on 5th August 1909. On the 11th of September 1909, the land was then transferred to John's son John Jewell (jnr) of Buckley Street Bendigo - Mining Manager. Following John Jewell Jnr's death, probate was granted allowing the land to be transferred to Ewart Norman Gladstone Jewell, Clerk, and Harriet Elizabeth Jewell, both of Thomas St Bendigo. The transfer was dated 3rd of October. On the 22nd May 1924 the land was transferred to James Caldwell, and a new title was issued - Vol 4854 - Fol 627.

As for the title on Vol 3114 - Fol 745, as with the above, following John's death the land was transferred to Sarah, and John, on the same dates. On the 11th of September 1909, at 11.30 a.m., the land was transferred to Elizabeth Ninnis (Jewell - John Snr's daughter). On the 5th of November Elizabeth sold the land to Charles William Halliday. On the 22nd May 1924 the land was transferred to James Caldwell, and a new title was issued - Vol 4854 - Fol 627.

The 2 blocks, that is Vol 3114 - Fol 745 & Vol 3114 - Fol 746, became 1, under the title of Vol 4854 - Fol 627, on the 22nd May 1924. The boundaries were also redrawn. As a result of this a new title, Vol 5735 - Fol 845 was issued on the 11th of June 1931. It was then decided to split up the block, into 3 blocks on the 16th of March 1948, with I main block (similar to what Vol 3114 - Fol 746 was), which became Vol 7159 - Fol 604, and 2 maleer blocks, Vol 7498 - Fol 019, and Vol 7092 - Fol 350. On the 1st of November 1971, the land on Vol 7159 - Fol 604, was split into 2 blocks, which became Vol 8900 - Fol 928, & Vol 8900 - Fol 929. These are the current titles. It seems now there are 4 blocks, where there was 2. At no time during all this did the "Jewells" have any dealings or ownership.

Photo of houseOn visiting Thomas Street I spoke to the people who bought, (whom I have identified as Mr & Mrs Flynn) the very left hand block at Thomas St (house No. 10), they bought the block only, there was no house on it. According to information they gathered from the pervious owners, the land had on it a stable (which was still on the block), and was used to keep horses. The block on its right (No.8) has on it the original Mine Managers home. The home is now owned by Mr. G. & Mrs. J. Pemberton.

If you are interested I have a section of a map drawn up in the early 1900's showing both these properties. Select this link to have a look. NB the GIF file is 1275 x 1754, in black and white.

House No.4

On the 27th of December 1907, John Jewell purchased the block of land from Walter Francis Watts. Upon John's death Sarah inherited the block, and the borders were redrawn. This changed the title to Vol 3365 - Fol 992, in Sarah's name. This was done on the 11/09/1909. Sarah kept the block until the 5th of March 1915, when it transferred to the Commercial Permanent Land & Building Society. According to the title the current owners are John & Susan Green. The address is 39 Bell Street.

House No. 5.

On the 2th of August 1901, John Jewell, shown as living in Bell Street Ironbark, Bendigo was granted the original title for this land. He paid 13 pounds, and 15 shillings. As with John's other land, on his death the land was transferred to his wife Sarah, and his son John Jnr (who was at the time living in Buckley St). On the 11th of September 1909, the title was transferred to John's son George Henry Jewell. Following the death of George Henry Jewell on the 27th April 1945, the land was transferred to his estate. On the 4th of October 1946, the title was transferred to James Truscott.

House No. 6.

On the 27th of September 1901, John Jewell, of Bendigo was granted the original title to this land. He paid 30 pounds. This block was next door to the above block, and according to the title this land followed the same path as the above, except at some time later the 2 blocks were subdivided, to form 5 blocks.
